Planting a Fruit Tree in a pot or container is more simple than you'd think. Growing fruit trees in a container are a GREAT option for people who haven't got space in the the ground to grow, or who need a more movable option. Lots of fruit trees do well in containers, but you'll do best with a dwarfing rootstock. In this case, I'm planting two Nagami Kumquats, which are naturally smaller trees (6-8 feet unpruned) and do great in pots. Container trees require a bit more attention than in the ground, but the planting steps in this video will help you get off to the right start.

When you want fruit trees in your backyard, but don't have the earth available for a backyard orchard, a great option is growing fruit trees in pots. Planting fruit trees directly in your backyard is ideal, but sometimes the only space you have is on a patio. The size of a container planted fruit tree can be kep in check by pruning (in this case, by pruning citrus trees small). Planting tree in a pot DOES take a little more attention, both in materials you add to the pot, as well as how you situate the tree itself. If you're worried about starting how to plant in a pot, know that container fruit trees make fruit accessible, even for someone who can't plant directly in the ground, like a renter or if you haven't got a yard. I chose to plant the Nagami kumquat, because of it being a fairly compact tree. This video will give you a great start on how to grow kumquat in a pot, but the same principles apply to generally growing fruit trees in a pot. Citrus trees grow well in containers, and there are many patio citrus trees out there. I used a whiskey barrel planter because of how it looks, and because wood is an excellent insulator helping to avoid extremes in temperature. And like dave wilson nursery and IV organic recommend, I've added a healthy mulch layer. Whether you're planting in a pot, or an oak barrel planter, with a little attention and care, you can grow your own fruit trees in containers nearly anywhere you are.
