Long QT syndrome is a congenital disorder. It is hereditary. It runs in families. This is a condition which is characterised by abnormalities in the cardiac electrical system which leads to sudden onset of dangerous fast beating pattern of the heart what we call ventricular tachyarrhythmias and these can be rapidly fatal also. Sometimes may also present with fainting or loss of consciousness that the arrhythmia terminates its own. However if the arrhythmia persist long enough to cause damage to the brain it may eventually cause death. So related finding of long QT syndrome are provoked by exercise, swimming or by emotional stress. The condition is recognised by the history and the presence of family history of sudden cardiac death and presence of pattern of prolonged QT interval on the ECG. These patients will typically required to be implanted with defibrillator which is life saver in them because it identifies the fast heart rhythm episodes and terminates them appropriately.
