STORYLINE
MASSIVE CROWDS CELEBRATE GAY PRIDE IN RIO
More than a million people gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for the city's annual gay pride parade.
Fifteen floats made their way through the streets alongside Copacabana beach, as the crowds danced to music.
The event, which is in its 17th year, aims to raise awareness of the gay community in Brazil and around the world.
"First it's a message of peace, of respect to citizenship, of everyone's rights. The parade has this cultural side touching hearts and minds all over Brazil, calling attention to respecting differences," said parade organizer Claudio Nascimento.
Unions between people of the same sex are recognized in Rio de Janeiro, although marriage is not.
"Even though the Danish gay parade is huge, this is overwhelming," said Danish tourist Casper Christensen, who turned out to watch the gay pride parade.
"It's quite huge and quite interesting to see so many people in one place gathering to celebrate this event."
