2. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
"Definitely, now is a crucial time, not only for Ukraine but also for the European Union and the whole European continent. It is currently being determined what the future of a united Europe will be. And whether it will be a future at all? Russia wants to destroy European unity to leave Europe divided and leave it weak. We are convinced that the whole of Europe is a target for Russia, and Ukraine is only the first stage of the aggression in these plans. That is why the European Union's positive response to Ukraine's application for membership can be a positive response to the question of whether the European project has a future at all."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission President:
"As you know, the Commission is currently preparing the recommendations, of so called opinions for the EU member states. We have been working day and night on this assessment and I promised to you in April, dear Volodymyr (Zelenskyy), that we will be tirelessly working on it. So, the discussions today will enable us to finalize our assessment by the end of next week. The path is known, it is a merit based path forward. It is a path, where I must say, I highly appreciate the enormous efforts and determination of Ukraine in this process. The people of Ukraine have proven incredible strength and motivation and stamina. So, I am deeply convinced that we will together, you will overcome this horrible atrocious war. We will and you will rebuild this beautiful country and modernize Ukraine and I just want to say we stand by your side. Slava Ukraine."

STORYLINE:
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a joint briefing in Kyiv on Saturday.
Von der Leyen said the Commission is "working day and night" on an assessment of Ukraine's eligibility as a possible candidate for EU membership.
Zelenskyy said Russia "wants to divide Europe, wants to weaken Europe" and described the war as just a "first stage" in Moscow's plans.
Zelenskyy called for new sanctions to target more Russian officials, including judges, and to hamper the activities of all Russian banks, including gas giant Gazprom's bank, as well as all Russian companies helping Moscow "in any way."
Von der Leyen praised Ukraine's "strength and resilience" in the face of Russia's "horrible and atrocious" invasion and said the EU would assist with rebuilding the country so it could "rise from the ashes."
Von der Leyen was on her second visit to Ukraine since Russia invaded its neighbor. She was one of the first European leaders to go to Ukraine during the war.
