Welcome back, it’s almost here! The end of the stay at home order of the lockdown is almost upon us, from next week we’ll be able to travel again to exercise so this will be our last run around Sandbach for a while.
Today as always we’ve started from the Cobbles by the Saxon crosses in Sandbach. Our route today takes us out past the old airfield and over the fields to Martins Moss and on down the lanes to Smallwood and then over the fields to pick up the far end of the Love lane path and back to Sandbach, its about 9 miles, however if you want a shorter route, might I suggest starting at Smallwood and cutting out the part heading into Sandbach by closing the loop at the Airfield, as that makes it about 5 miles.
A bit of local trivia, the Airfield closed back in 2019 it was a popular spot for microlights and light aircraft however did you know that during the war there was a fake airstrip nearby? Designed to put off enemy fighters by making them think they were in the wrong place if you look carefully at the sides of the track leading to the airfield you can see large pieces of concrete which I assume belonged to it.
The Route
Starting from the Cobbles, we head down Church Street and cross the road and head up the path to Maple Close. At the end of Maple Close we turn right into Hawthorne Drive and then take the footpath on our left over the fields to Church Lane where we turn left and then right into Reynolds Lane. At the bend take the track to the left and onto the path to the old airfield. Head straight across the field and follow the path through to Newcastle Road. Cross over and head down the lane taking a right into Martins Moss on the bend. Head through Martins Moss and on to Smallwood. At Congleton Road by Smallwood School, cross and take the path opposite which brings us out further down Newcastle Road. Turn left and head down the hill and take the first path on your right which takes you across the fields to Love lane. At Love lane turn right and take the path on your left which brings us back to Betchton, turn right and then take the track on your right with takes us back to the airfield. At the airfield turn left and take the path over the fields to Reynolds Lane. Turn left at Reynolds Lane and then right onto School lane at Sandbach Heath. Take the cut through path to Heath road then at Heath road turn left and right into Hawthorne Drive retracing your steps back into town.
