(28 Nov 2014) Romania's president-elect visited Moldova on Friday to underline Romania's support for Moldova's integration into the European Union.
Klaus Iohannis met Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti and the leader of Liberal Democrat Party of Moldova (PDLM), Vlad Filat, in the Moldovan capital Chisinau.
Iohannis' visit comes two days ahead of parliamentary elections in Moldova.
"Romania has an uncontested duty towards Moldova - the building of a common space of democracy, stability and prosperity for Romanian and Moldovan citizens," Iohannis said at a news conference at Timofti's presidential headquarters.
Moldova - located between Ukraine and EU member state Romania - has a breakaway region, Trans-Dniester, that has ambitions to join Russia.
Opinion polls suggest pro-European parties are beating pro-Russian parties ahead of Sunday's election, but the outcome is far from certain.
"These are the most important elections after the proclamation of Moldovan independence," said Filat at a joint news conference with Iohannis at the PDLM headquarters.
Filat added that his party was "united in offering a European future to Moldova, in offering our citizens a better life in the great family of the European Union".
