STORYLINE:
Hungary announced a shipping ban on the Danube on Tuesday, saying the waves caused by passing vessels were affecting flood defences.
The Danube's water level stood at 8.58 meters (28 feet, 3 inches) early Tuesday at Budapest, 10 centimeters (4 inches) higher than the previous all-time record, measured in 2002.
Water Affairs Minister Miklos Persanyi said the Danube's peak was expected late Tuesday and that waters would be slow to recede.
Gabor Demszky, mayor of Budapest said "The flood control division is in place. We are protecting Budapest. The dams are set to protect Budapest for up to 10 metres."
So far, 516 Hungarians had been evacuated from 59 localities.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said Hungary would ask the European Union to speed up the release of cash from an EU solidarity fund to help countries deal with the flooding.
