A family spokesman for the family of Muhammad Ali said the boxing legend died of septic shock "due to unspecified natural causes." Bob Gunnell said Ali died Friday at 9:10 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, spending the last hours of his life surrounded by his family.
"They had a full day to say farewell to Muhammad," Gunnell said. "All family members, all daughters and his son were in attendance, and his wife. They got quality time to spend with him and say final goodbyes."
A public funeral service is scheduled for Friday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Ali's family will hold a private service on Thursday in Louisville.
"They certainly believe that Muhammad was a citizen of the world, and he truly was, said Gunnell.
"They know the world grieves with them, and they've received tens of thousands of well-wishes, and support."
The public funeral will be translated and streamed on the internet. Former President Bill Clinton will be one of the eulogists. Bryant Gumbel and Billy Crystal will also eulogize the three-time heavyweight champion of the world.
