Generational divide within families, and exterior forces, with different ideologies, that are pulling its members in different, seemingly opposite, directions. The novel is trying to show the struggle between appreciation for traditions and a need for change, progress. And the plot is a microcosm of the existential crisis that faced Russia in the 19th century.
