Funarte's wide collection of photography, comprising more than 3,000 images, was built on three fronts: the exhibitions organized by the Photography Nucleus, starting in 1979; by Funarte's National Institute of Photography, since its creation in 1984; and by Funarte's Photography Department (which replaced INFoto in 1990). It is, therefore, an extremely rich and diversified collection, which faithfully represents the main movements in Brazilian photography over a period of three decades.
