“Writing Baghdad, Reading Israel” explores the ways in which Iraqi Jewish authors have brought their individual and collective memories to the Israeli audience, thereby opening the national story to different voices and experiences.
Nancy E. Berg teaches courses on Middle Eastern, Israeli and Jewish literatures and cultures at Washington University in St. Louis. She has written a trilogy on Iraqi Jewish authors: Exile from Exile explores the works of the Israeli heirs to the longest continuous Jewish community, Babylonian Jewry; More and More Equal analyzes the literary career of writer Sami Michael, and the ways in which his increasing popularity and critical acclaim reflect changes in Israeli society; We Remember Babylon focuses on literary reminiscences of Baghdad. Prof. Berg has also written on the Israeli mystery, women writers, food in literature, place, memory, and the choice of language. She is the recent past president of the NAPH, an international association for professors of Hebrew.
