Opposition leader Peter Dutton has explained his migration clampdown and ban on foreign home ownership as a way to restore the “great Australian dream” as Australia currently does “not have the houses”.
“Millions of people around the country are worried about the homeownership crisis that Labor's created; you can't bring a million people in over two years and only have a quarter of a million homes that have been built,” Mr Dutton told Sky News host Erin Molan.
“We've got an 11-year low of building approvals in our country, and we have a situation where the government's bringing in 1.67 million people over five years – the biggest intake in our country's history – and we just don't have the houses for people.
“I think we've been listening to Australians who want to get into rental accommodation, who want to buy their first home, who just want to get into the housing market, and I want to restore that great Australian dream of homeownership for them.”
