Welcome!
This video shows an actual hand knotted rug that was repaired using Duct Tape. While we do love Duct Tape for many of our own projects around the house, using it to repair a rug is definitely not a good use.
Even if a proper repair is beyond the budget, a simple stitch to hold the seam together will slow down the eventual further opening of the torn area. Duct Tape will eventually fail and may make a proper repair more difficult if you later chose to invest the money into a rug like the one in the video.
We suggest two options:
1. Re-weaving the foundation yarns which actually hold the wool pile yarns into the rug. Then re-weave the pile back into the foundation
or a more economical solution:
2. Patch the rug with a donor piece of rug from a similar style rug.
Also, as a last resort you can opt to have a fiber glass patch adhered onto the back to hold the two sides together, not the best way to go but very affordable.
