Several thousand Iraqis demonstrated in the capital Baghdad on Saturday over the burning and damaging of the Koran, Islam’s holy book, during anti-Islam protests in Sweden and Denmark.
Security forces on Saturday pushed back the protesters, preventing them from reaching the Danish Embassy. Some of the demonstrators burnt Swedish and LGBTQ flags and chanted anti-Western slogans.
During similar protests last week, the crowd had stormed Swedish Embassy in Baghdad, scaling its walls and setting it on fire in protest against the expected burning of a Koran in Sweden.
Iraqi government had also expelled the Swedish ambassador and Chargé d'affaires and revoked the working permit of Ericsson, a Swedish company.
