Signs and symptoms of Goat and Lamb Polio:
-Muscle rigidity
-Lack of coordination
-Periorbital swelling (swelling around the eyes)
-Blindness/stargazing
-Seizure activity
-Head turned over the back
-Hunching/Arching of the back
Treatment for goat and lamb polio is as follows:
-5ml Vitamin B complex (containing 100mg vitamin B1/thiamine) subcutaneously, every 12 hours until symptoms improve.
-For acute/severe cases, consider 2ml given intramuscularly once in addition to subcutaneous injections.
-Once symptoms improve, continue 5ml Vitamin B complex every day for another 5 days.
-Continue to give 5ml Vitamin B complex once a week for one month.
-Consider Dexamethasone for inflammation, 1ml per 20-50lbs body weight, subcutaneously, every 24 hours.
-Temporary blindness may be occurring. Please consider providing an oral drench of water if needed.
-Consider placing animals in a small pen where water and food are easily accessible.
-Vitamin B Complex is available over the counter at most big box farm stores.
-Dexamethasone is available by prescription only.
