Do you buy MREs by the case? Are you considering purchasing an MRE case? Do you know what the little orange sticker on the case is for? If you do then you don't need to watch this video. If you don't know, that little sticker is called a Time and Temperature Indicator, or TTI. It can be a useful helper for someone looking to buy genuine MREs by the case. Since you're most likely going to have to get your cases on the secondary market (eBay, Amazon, Craigslist...) unless you are in the military or have connections with someone on a military base, you probably won't know with certainty if the case(s) you're buying have been stored properly. Sellers will of course always say they were stored in a cool, dry basement. But how can you know that for sure? You can't. At least a TTI will give you a rough idea if the MREs in the case are still good. The TTI will darken over time (MREs are designed to last 3-5 years, though they can remain edible much longer than that). The shelf life becomes shorter a storage temperature goes up. A TTI will darken a lot faster in hot temperatures than in cool ones. It's not an exact science, but if a seller is offering two-year-old cases of MREs (which SHOULD be fine) and the TTI is black in the middle, there might be reason to be extra cautious.
