When Stalin invaded east Poland in 1939, 200,000 Polish troops were arrested and sent to POW or hard labor camps. When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Stalin agreed to release the Polish troops to form an army against Hitler. During an epic journey over thousands of miles, 74,000 men survived starvation and disease to reach freedom in Iran.
