Hi, today we will be talking about emotions in social psychology. Emotions are different from moods and emotional disorders. They are brief in duration, typically seconds, minutes, or hours. They are specific responses to people and events, and their function is to meet social goals. Emotions motivate us to act in ways that affect important relationships and help us navigate the social environment. For example. Gratitude motivates us to reward good actions so that more of such good actions will be done in the future. Anger motivates us to right social wrongs and guilt motivates us to make amends. However, not all emotions are good or beneficial. Such as outbursts at your boss or a friend. So how do you know what emotions you are feeling? We construe situations and label emotions appropriately through a process known as appraisal. When we encounter emotional triggers, the primary appraisal occurs as we experience an initial flash of positive or negative feeling. It is unconscious, fast, and automatic. When we process the information logically, secondary appraisal occurs. The initial positive or negative feelings become labeled as emotions. This is conscious, slower, and more deliberate compared to the primary appraisal. This appraisal process can result in a phenomenon known as misattribution of arousal. A study was done by Dutton and Aron known as the bridge study. The study was conducted on a scary suspension bridge where an attractive female confederate would survey males who have just crossed the bridge. After the survey, she would give him her name and phone number for any questions regarding the survey. The control would be a sturdy bridge that is much less scary. It was found that More males contacted the female experimenter when they had just walked down the suspension bridge, which was thought to be due to their misattribution of their arousal (they believed that they were feeling sexual arousal at the sight of the female instead of feeling the leftover physiological arousal from the fear of walking across the suspension bridge). Thanks for watching. Remember to like comment and subscribe. Bye.
