Only hours after ousting incumbent Democratic governor Jon Corzine in a hard-fought campaign, Republican Chris Christie made his first appearance as governor-elect in the Democratic stronghold of Newark. Christie, who was born in Newark and served as U.S. Attorney there, visited the Robert Treat Academy, a successful charter school he spoke about frequently during his campaign. Touring the school with its founder, local Democratic power broker Stephen Adubato, Sr., as well as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Christie said the school was a model to be replicated around the state and pledged to work with Democrats and Republicans to improve urban education.
