On September 11th, 2023, Storm Daniel decimated the city of Derna in eastern Libya. According to the mayor of Derna, Abdelmonem al-Ghaithi, as many as 25,000 people may have died. The UNOCHA estimates that up to 40,000 people have been displaced because of the storm’s impact.
Natasha Hall, Senior Fellow for the Middle East Program at CSIS, explains the impact of the storm on Derna and the political factors that contributed to the catastrophic response.
