(27 Jan 2016) The motion to decide on Malaysia's participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) was passed in Malaysia's House of Representatives, the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.
The motion was approved through bloc voting with 127 votes supporting the motion from the Barisan Nasional ruling party while the 84 opposition MPs voted against it.
The motion will now be brought to the Dewan Negara, the equivalent of a Senate, whose members are appointed by the government.
They will debate the issue on Thursday before effectively rubber stamping the motion.
Once approved the deal will be formally signed in New Zealand on February 4 by all 12 TPPA countries - Australia, Brunei, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Japan, United States, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam. It will create the biggest free trade area in the world.
These countries form 40 percent of the world's economy.
