With Walmart and other major employers scaling back their DEI programs, even outlets like The New York Times and MSNBC are suddenly rethinking the wisdom of identity-based hiring and training. A recently published study from the Network Contagion Research Institute, titled “Instructing Animosity: How DEI Pedagogy Produces the Hostile Attribution Bias,” has now proven what many of us could have guessed—rather than cultivating “inclusive environments” and “greater empathy in interpersonal interactions,” DEI initiatives breed paranoia and resentment, compelling employees to see discrimination where none exists. Maybe it’s time to heed Morgan Freeman’s simple advice: stop obsessing over race and treat each other as human beings first. A healthier workplace culture—and a healthier American culture—requires us to reject groupthink and focus on character, competence, and individual dignity.
