(3 Oct 2019) Colleges got $60M-plus from OxyContin family
Prestigious universities around the world have accepted at least $60 million from the family that owns OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma over the past five years.
Schools have accepted the donations even as the company has become embroiled in lawsuits over its role in the opioid epidemic.
Financial records reviewed by The Associated Press show that major beneficiaries of the Sackler family include the University of Oxford in England and Rockefeller, Cornell and Columbia universities in New York.
Some critics see the donations as a naked attempt to salvage the family's reputation.
Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart said the school decided this year not to accept new gifts.
Some other schools said they had no plans to accept Sackler funding for the foreseeable future.
Most others refused to disclose their plans.
At many schools, the money has already been spent.
And even if officials wanted to return what's left, it isn't as simple as writing a check. There are tax hurdles and legal obstacles that can make it difficult to return gifts from charities.
Brown said it will redirect unspent money to Rhode Island nonprofit groups that treat opioid addiction.
