"Mental Health and COVID-19: Integrated Health Care Solutions," is the second in a fourt-part series of webinars put on by the Center for Integration of Primary Care and Oral Health, and features Drs. Heather Klusaritz, Huong Le, Philip Wang, and Tien Jiang. Referred to as the “second wave of COVID-19", the current mental health crisis is overwhelming individuals, communities, and health care systems. While we have not yet moved beyond the upheaval caused by the global pandemic, we need to act quickly and proactively to address the mental health burden that will continue long past the infection. Early data is showing a rise in symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as reports of domestic violence and abuse. While everyone has felt the emotional toll of COVID-19, those who are already disproportionately impacted by social, health, and economic factors are bearing the weight of this mental health crisis. Integrated health systems can close care gaps and deliver mental health services in settings such as primary care and dental clinics. Today’s trainees must be prepared to properly screen and refer patients who are undoubtedly suffering during these unprecedented times.
