STORYLINE:
China’s political advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), wrapped up its annual session in Beijing on Saturday, after it completed its leadership handover.
Newly appointed chairman Wang Huning delivered a speech at the closing ceremony, underscoring that Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics must be upheld as the “guiding ideology of the Party and the country” for a long time.
The group running in coordination with the party’s United Front Department works to build Xi’s influence and image abroad.
Wang has been a top adviser to three Chinese leaders and has authored books critiquing Western politics and society.
The meeting was held in parallel with the largely powerless National People's Congress, at which Chinese leader Xi Jinping was awarded a third five-year term as the nation's president.
Premier Li Qiang and former Premier Li Keqiang were also in attendance.
