Like France, Europe’s biggest economy Germany is heading straight into a brewing political crisis as 2024 draws to a close. German politics has been in upheaval since Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost his parliamentary majority last month. After Chancellor Scholz lost a confidence vote, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the Bundestag, calling snap elections for February 23. Steinmeier cited the failure of the govt to secure a Parliamentary majority after Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s Free Democrats exited the coalition. Conservative challenger Friedrich Merz, likely to replace Scholz, claimed that the incumbent government had imposed excessive regulations and stifled growth. As Germany braces for a decisive election, the fragmented political environment signals challenging coalition negotiations in the months ahead
