Nigerian bakers are sounding the alarm over soaring flour prices, even though the government approved a duty-free importation waiver on wheat, maize, and other essentials. Last Wednesday, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria in Lagos held a protest demanding the federal government’s intervention. Chief Ayoola Mathew, the association's chairman, criticised local millers for not implementing the waiver, which has exacerbated flour price hikes and impacted bakery operations. The protestors are calling for a government investigation into flour millers and sugar producers, enforcement of the waiver, and a reduction in flour prices to a more manageable range of 30,000 to 40,000 naira per bag. Additionally, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reported that some bread in the market fails safety tests due to the use of saccharine, a result of high sugar costs.
