Bharat Dynamics ltd(BDL)
Bharat Dynamics ltd(BDL) is a government PSU that produces wide variety of weapons such as Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, Air to Air Missiles, Air to Surface Weapons, Launchers, Test Equipment, Underwater Weapons, and Counter Measure Systems. It is a major production agency of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). The most important of the weapons that BDL has produced in large numbers are Akash SAM system and Astra missiles.
BDL Future orders
The company has won a new order of around Rs 3,100 crore from Indian Army. The Company is expecting order worth more than Rs10,000 crore including refurbishment orders for the upkeeping of old missiles/weapons. The company is performing well in terms of finances with expectation of Rs 25,000 crore order in next 2-3 years.
Astra Air-to-Air Missile in IAF
If we talk about the order for Astra MK1 Missiles, In July 2020, the Defence Ministry had approved 248 Astra Beyond Visual Range air-to-air missiles. These missiles will be delivered to Indian Air Force by this year.
In September 2017, Astra was cleared for production at BDL’s manufacturing facility in Telangana for an initial order of 50 missiles. Indian Air Force has already received 50 pre-production Astra missiles back in 2019 followed by an order of 200 more missiles. Once the order of 200 missiles is complete the much bigger order of Astra – more than 400 missiles can be expected for MIG-29 UPG and LCA Tejas of air force. The flight trails of Astra missiles on HAL Limited series production Tejas will be carried out in 2022.
Specifications of Astra MK1
Astra MK1 is powered by a smokeless, single stage, solid fuel propulsion system that can propel the missile to a speed of Mach 4.5 and allows operation from a maximum altitude of 20 km. The maximum range of Astra is 110 km in head-on chase mode and 20 km in tail chase mode. The maximum range is achieved when the missile launched from an altitude of 3 km. When fired from an altitude of 2 km the range of the missile drops to just 44 km & when launched from sea level, the range drops further to 21 km. Astra can be launched in both autonomous and buddy mode operation and can lock on to its target before or after it is launched.
Aksah SAM in Army & IAF
Talking about Akash Surface to Air Missile, It is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. Indian Air Force in total has 13 squadrons of Akash in service and 2 more ordered on 9th July 2021. Each squadron of Akash SAM contains 8 Launchers, 125 missiles. The Indian Air Force has deployed Akash at its bases in Gwalior (Maharajpur AFS), Jalpaiguri (Hasimara AFS), Tezpur, Jorhat and Pune.
At the same time Indian Army has two regiments ordered, with deliveries starting in 2015 and completed in 2018. Two more regiments are ordered in 2019. Indian Army had also deployed Akash air defence system along Line of Actual Control in Ladakh during the stand-off in the year 2020.
Akash Export potential
Back on 30 December 2020, Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cleared the exports of Akash missile defence system. Last year in March 2021, Philippines had signed an arms agreement with India to potentially acquire Indian weapons including the BrahMos & Akash Missile. Besides Philippines, Belarus, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE and Vietnam have shown interest in purchasing the Akash missile system.
