As the world's earliest and longest man-made canal, the Grand Canal is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, linking Beijing in the north with Hangzhou in the south. It has witnessed more than 2,500 years of China's spanning history, particularly the early development of hydraulic engineering.
