Seoul's Foreign Ministry lodges complaint over Iranian envoy's mention of possible end of Seoul-Tehran ties

South Korea's foreign ministry summoned Iran's top diplomat in Seoul on Friday to lodge a complaint over his reported remarks that hinted at a possible end of Seoul-Tehran relations if South Korea sends troops to help patrol the Strait of Hormuz.
The ministry says it brought in Iranian Ambassador to South Korea Saeed Badamchi Shabestari to check if he made the remarks that were reported by the local daily Joong-Ang Ilbo.
The ambassador told the ministry that he mentioned South Korea's participation in a U.S.-led maritime security campaign in the strait could influence Seoul-Tehran ties but insisted he did not directly mention the end of relations.
The ambassador's remarks came as Seoul mulls whether to send forces to the Strait of Hormuz at the request of the U.S., amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.
