PM Imran Khan to build new dams to irrigate lands, double water will be stored | Explore Pakistan
Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that with the construction of ten dams by the government, more lands will be irrigated and water storage capacity will be doubled to mitigate the effects of climate change. He was addressing an international symposium on the subject. He said that China built 5,000 dams while Pakistan built only two big dams in the sixties. He said that if the hydropower potential of the country had been utilized, the country would not have faced the problem of rising electricity prices and inflation today.
He said that in view of the growing population of the country, we have to cultivate more land in Dera Ismail Khan, Balochistan and Thar which is possible with the availability of water. The doer can become a country. Referring to the proposal of Minister for Water Resources Monis Elahi to construct Kala Bagh Dam, the Prime Minister acknowledged that Pakistan needs to store more water and the site of Kala Bagh is very suitable for the dam. However, he said that the people of Sindh had reservations about the project
Construction of dams is in full swing. Michael Rogers, President of the International Commission on Large Dams, described the construction of ten large dams by Pakistan as a world-class endeavor.
He lauded the capabilities of WAPDA for initiating these projects, especially the Diamer Bhasha Dam, saying that future generations would benefit from this dam. He assured Pakistan of providing up-to-date information to help in the construction of these dams. WAPDA Chairman Muzammil Hussain said that the purpose of construction of dams was for food and human security. The work is in full swing.
