The qobyz (қобыз) is an ancient Kazakh string instrument, traditionally made from a single piece of wood with two strings of horsehair. It has a resonating cavity usually covered with goat leather. Historically, the qobyz was considered a sacred instrument used by shamans and spiritual healers, believed to have the power to banish evil spirits, sickness, and death. In modern times, the qobyz has been adapted with four metallic strings and is used to play traditional Kazakh music and complex violin compositions. The instrument is central to the Kazakh music genre known as küi, which consists of short, programmatic pieces that often imitate natural sounds.
