(25 Jan 2012) FARHADI'S 'A SEPARATION' RAISES THE BAR FOR IRANIAN CINEMA
A prominent Iranian filmmaker expressed hope after the official nomination of Iranian film "A Separation" for the Oscars on Tuesday (24 JAN. 2012).
"This film (Separation) has shown that in every detail, ranging from directing and cinematography to brilliant performance of actors, has been above the level of Iranian cinema and much of the rest of the world," director Vahid Nikkhah-Azad said.
"Definitely these awards (Golden Globe Award and Nomination for Oscars) make us happier and we hope Iranian cinema is further recognized in international level."
"A Separation" tells the story of a couple heading for divorce and dealing with domestic troubles with a young child and an aging parent. It examines gender, religious and class distinctions in contemporary Iran.
The film, from writer-director Asghar Farhadi, won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film last weekend and has been nominated for the Foreign Language and Best Original Screenplay categories at the Academy Awards.
Nikkhah-Azad attributed its success to the wide-reaching subject matter:
"Farhadi's film is a vivid and clear film depicting urban life of middle class. There is not an overdose of bitter realities. It is not a dismal portrayal (of Iranian society) and because of its universal theme the film has achieved such recognition. "
