The Laboratory Director of the Year Award recognizes an individual leader’s support of technology transfer for economic development.

This year’s winner is Dr. Paul Kearns of Argonne National Laboratory.

Elevating the impact of its work is a priority for Argonne, and Paul has vastly increased the lab’s impact in just a few years through a metamorphosis of the lab’s technology commercialization activities.

The lab has taken a strategic approach to developing partnerships through programs like the Innovation XLab Artificial Intelligence event and the Chain Reaction Innovations program. Lab researchers are encouraged to find new avenues for engagement, and Argonne has started a laboratory-embedded entrepreneurship program and a commercialization council.

Paul has also made Argonne a destination for prospective industry partners, especially those interested in the company’s battery portfolio, which has been featured in several Battery Industry Day events.
