Our search for the right motorcycle continues with this close look at the two Keihin carburetor types found on Evolution V-twin Sportster motorcycles. From 1986 to 1987, Harley-Davidson used a basic Keihin 34mm fixed venturi carburetor carried over from the Ironhead era. This butterfly throttle valve carburetor is functional and relatively easy to re-jet for altitude. To better meet tighter emissions standards and reduce altitude challenges, the Keihin CV40 Constant Velocity carburetor became Sportster original equipment in 1988. This variable venturi, piston and diaphragm carburetor serves through the 2006 models.
