Introduction
Cerumen impaction is a common complaint in the primary care setting as well as in the emergency department. Patients can be of any age, but it more commonly affects older adults, males, those with hearing aids, and those who are mentally impaired. Improper use of cotton swabs, dermatologic disease, and narrow external auditory canals increase the likelihood of cerumen impaction.1

The treatment of cerumen impaction is often initiated in the clinical setting then continued at home. Though uncomfortable, it is almost never a true emergency. However, cerumen impaction often causes significant discomfort and anxiety. Although numerous commercial ceruminolytic (wax-softening) products have become available, clinicians should have basic skills in cerumen removal.
