Hi, Dr. Eric Janowitz here. I'm here to talk to you about the cervical pillow. So sleeping instructions. When you sleep you want to sleep on your back or you want to sleep on your side. You do not want to sleep on your stomach because that will require you to rotate your head for a long period of time, causing a lot of twisting to your spine. So, back or side.
Now, people always ask, "What's the best pillow to use for that as well?" We've worked very hard to find a proper cervical pillow. Why I like this pillow is your neck from the side is supposed to have a normal curve, if you recall, 43-degree angle. The pillow was designed that when you sleep on your back, you're head fits in here just like this, so it's perfect. You want to start off on your back in the center here.
But if you turn your head to the right while sleeping, you will literally rotate and your head will rest on the higher side to keep your spine neutral. The most common mistake people make with the pillow is they side sleep with their head in the middle, which causes an angle here.
You start off in your back, turn to your right, you land here. If you turn to your left, you land over here. The other thing you want to be aware of is the pillow is designed with a shorter version and a longer version. If your neck is longer, you simply would have this part of the pillow, the longer side, going into the neck. If your neck is shorter, you would use the shorter version here as well.
It's really important that you do your neck exercises prior to going to sleep and that you use your plural [SP] dotted neck exercise as well to get motion in the neck. Now, the pillow is hard and it's thicker. It's not that space aged foam one because those pillows actually mold to your neck. And if your neck is a bad position, it's molding to a bad position. So that's why we really recommend this pillow.
It does have care instructions that come with the pillow as well. Please follow all those. If you've any questions at all, you can obviously talk to the practice. First couple nights you may have a little soreness, that's not unusual. So you might want to use the pillow for just a couple hours and switch it out to your other pillow until you get used to the pillow as well. I think you're going to enjoy it as well.
The other thing I just want you know is that we do have a pediatric version in addition. There is one for the kiddos. I'm sorry though, we don't have the cool fun ones that look like this for you guys. But this is great for the children as well to work on their proper curve development. Thanks so much. I'll see you on your next visit.
