Officially classified as a sub-collection within the greater Seamaster lineup, the Omega Planet Ocean doubles the depth rating of the standard Seamaster Diver, offering users 600 meters of water resistance and occupying the position of Omega’s most dive-worthy line of timepieces.
Omega first launched the Planet Ocean in 2005, and in the years since its initial release, the collection has significantly expanded, becoming one of Omega’s most popular lines of timepieces. While the Planet Ocean features a number of design elements that draw inspiration from vintage Seamaster models, it is a throughout modern timepiece, both inside and out.
The Omega Planet Ocean is a more robust and capable version of the classic Seamaster Diver. Both watches feature screw-down crowns and a manually operated helium escape valve on the side of the case at the 10 o’clock location. However, while both models are highly-capable professional dive watches, everything about the Omega Planet Ocean is geared more for underwater use.
Compared to the Seamaster Diver, the case of the Planet Ocean is significantly thicker - a necessary requirement for its 600-meter depth rating. Additionally, while the bezel of the Diver 300 features a sloped, scalloped edge, the bezel on the Planet Ocean features more of a coin-edge design that makes it easier to grip while wearing gloves.
Like other Omega watch collections, the Planet Ocean range is remarkably varied, and you can find Planet Ocean models in a handful of different sizes, crafted from a range of different materials, and fitted with a number of different complications.
At the present time, Omega offers the Planet Ocean in stainless steel, grade 5 titanium, 18k Sedna rose gold, two-tone steel and gold, and 18k white gold, the later of which is only available for a limited-edition gem-set version of the watch. With that in mind, Omega previously offered various models within the Planet Ocean lineup that featured striking cases crafted entirely from either blue or black ceramic.
While these models are no longer in production, they are still readily available on the secondary market and offer a unique and high-tech take on Omega’s premier dive watch.
The original Planet Ocean was a time and date watch; however by 2006 - just one year after the initial introduction of the collection - Omega had added a chronograph version to the lineup. In 2013, a GMT variant was also introduced, and at the present time, all three different configurations remain part of Omega’s catalog.
Regardless of the specific model or materials, all Omega Planet Ocean watches offer the same 600-meter depth rating, which is far more water resistance than anyone will ever need - even for commercial diving and serious professional use.
Over the years, Omega has slightly played around with different case sizes for the Planet Ocean; however at the present time, the smallest version (a time and date model) measures 39.5mm, while the largest (a chronograph) clocks in at 45.5mm. Additionally, a 43.5mm version is also available, and this is the standard size for the time and date models, in addition to being the only size available for the GMT variant.
All of the various models in Omega’s current Planet Ocean lineup feature the brand’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer movements.
This new generation of in-house calibers adheres to even more demanding tolerances than COSC-specifications, and promises timekeeping accuracy between -0 and +5 seconds per day. Additionally, Omega’s Master Chronometer movements are also entirely antimagnetic, offering magnetic resistance in excess of 15,000 gauss.
As a point of reference, this is more than 15 times greater than the magnetic resistance offered by the Rolex Milgauss, and since the movements themselves are antimagnetic, no internal shield is needed, allowing Omega to put them on full display through a sapphire caseback.
Between 600 meters of water resistance and a movement that is impervious to the effects of magnetism, the Omega Planet Ocean is a true go-anywhere, do-anything tool watch. Additionally, given the range of variation that exists in the current Planet Ocean lineup, finding a model that perfectly suits your individual style and tastes has never been easier.
