There is little doubt that heritage destinations in general would like to be sustainable, especially since surveys indicate that an overwhelming majority of travellers expect the tourism and travel offer to be sustainable. In this
presentation the question of whether heritage destinations would benefit from the work of Green Destinations was addressed. To this end, the idea of ‘destination sustainability interpretation’ was introduced as a new theoretical concept in which tourism destination management is enriched by tools and approaches from heritage interpretation. The presentation gave an indication of the kind of opportunities that can be based upon the tools Green Destinations has developed for better communication of tourism sustainability. There is a need to communicate better about tourism
sustainability since there is no common definition of it and many travellers have different ideas when talking about sustainability.
