In the build-up to Christmas, we’re spreading yet more World Cup cheer. Not just any old World Cup cheer: ENGLAND World Cup cheer.
We’re profiling two talismanic figures of England’s past and placing them into the correct conditions and see what they can conjure up from a couple of World Cups where England left empty-handed.
Kevin Keegan was just leaving the peak of his powers in 1982, but was still one of The Three Lions’ key players. However, he wouldn’t get much chance to extoll those virtues as he featured for just 26 minutes, coming from the bench in an attempt to rescue England’s place at the tournament. Let’s heal him and see if he could rescue England’s World Cup.
Paul Gascoigne, like Keegan, had ever slightly strayed from his peak by the 1998 World Cup, but Glenn Hoddle’s decision to snub him from the 22-man squad enraged fans who could misty-eyed recall the great performances from the midfielder, from the Tears of Turin to that Scotland goal. We’ll pick Gazza for France ’98, and see if he could have ended 32 years of hurt.
