Dallas trial lawyer Charla Aldous discusses her case, Martin v. Medical City. The case involves a 15-year-old girl, Rachael Martin, born with cerebral palsy. Following surgery to open an airway, medical staff gave her 40 times the recommended dose of the anesthetic Propofol.
"To know as a parent that you lost your child is ... I can't imagine a greater loss. But then to know that it didn't have to happen -- that they should not have died -- I can't comprehend how a parent could deal with that. What I would often do is send Wayne and Brenda Martin the depositions -- the video -- and let them watch them. And when they needed to turn it off they could turn it off and go walk around the block to get their thoughts together. And what I always tried to remind them of and to remind my clients of is I can't go back and change the facts. I can't bring your loved one back, but I can get you the answers, to the extent possible bring closure and most importantly do everything we can to prevent this happening to another family."
