When the Martin B-26 Marauder first entered service, the Army Air Corps had a new design, but like others, it had issues. Propeller control issues and engine problems led to many fatal crashes. The Marauder earned a reputation as being hard to fly and a raft of uncomplimentary nicknames such as The Widow Maker and the Flying Prostitute.
However, once the problems with the propellers and engines were solved and the pilots learned how to fly the B-26, it became a very effective medium bomber that could take a lot of punishment and bring its crew home. By 1944, the B-26 had a lower accident rate than the B-25. It also had the lowest loss rate/mission of any bomber flown in World War II. This presentation is the story of the problems, what the fixes were and what types of missions the plane flew.
