Sikhism is a monotheistic Religion. It was formed as an off-shoot of Hinduism mainly refusing polytheistic belief, idol worship, caste system and Vedas
*Sikhism was influenced by Islam and Muslims and hence it’s strictly monotheistic
- DEFINITION OF SIKH AND SIKHISM:
The word ‘Sikh’ is derived from the word sisya meaning disciple or follower. Sikhism is a religion of ten Gurus, the first Guru being Guru Nanak and the tenth and the last being Guru Gobind Singh. The sacred book of Sikhism is Sri Guru Granth also called Adi Granth Sahib.
- THE FIVE – ‘K’s
Every Sikh is supposed to keep the following 5 ‘K’s, which also serve to identify him as a Sikh:
1) Kesh – uncut hair.
2) Kanga – comb; to keep hair clean.
3) Kada – steel bangle; for strength.
4) Kirpan – dagger; for self-defence.
5) Kaccha – knee length underwear
- CONCEPT OF GOD IN SIKHISM
MULMANTRA: THE FUNDAMENTAL CREED OF SIKHISM
It is mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, volume 1 Japuji, the first verse:
"There exists but one God, who is called The True, The Creator, Free from fear and hate, Immortal, Not begotten, Self-Existent, Great and Compassionate."
God has several attributes such as
Kartar – The Creator
Akal – The Eternal
Sattanama – The Holy Name
Sahib – The Lord
Parvardigar – The Cherisher
Rahim – The Merciful
Karim – The Benevolent
He is also called Wahe Guru – the One true God.
*One can see several names of God used in Sikhism are carried from Islamic terminology and many are direct attributes of Allah (swt).
- Besides Sikhism being strictly monotheistic, it also does not believe in Avataravada – the doctrine of incarnation. Almighty God does not incarnate Himself in what is known as Avatara. Sikhism is also strongly against idol worship.
- SCRIPTURE: GURU GRANTH SAHIB
Guru Nanak was influenced by the sayings of Sant Kabir so much that several chapters of Sri Guru Granth Sahib contains several couplets of Sant Kabir. There are also writing for Baba Farid and other Muslim saints and scholars inculcated in Sikh scripture. It is said that 70% of Sikh scripture is Muslim teachings, couplets and poems written by Muslim saints and teachers.
One of the famous couplets of Sant Kabir is:
"Dukh mein sumirana sabh karein
Sukh mein karein na koya
Jo sukh mein sumirana karein
To dukh kaye hoye?"
Translation: "In times of trouble, God is remembered by all
But none remembers Him during peace and happiness.
If God is remembered in good times of happiness
Why should trouble occur?"
*Compare this with the following verse of the Qur’an:
"When some trouble toucheth man,
He crieth unto his Lord,
Turning to Him in repentance:
But when He bestoweth
A favour upon him
As from Himself,
(Man) doth forget what he cried
And prayed for before,
And he doth set up
Rivals unto Allah."
[Al-Qur’an 39:8]
*DAWAH to Sikh friends
- Asking questions is a way to open discussion and let ideas get through
- Following are serious questions to ponder:
1) If Sikhism is true religion of God then
- what was the religion of God before Sikhism?
- if Sikh says, all religions are from God, then why did Guru Nanak start new religion instead of following the existing religions of God!
The only answer is they need to attest that Islam is possibly the true religion of God
2) If Sikhism is religion of God for all humanity then why did all 10 gurus come from same city and same part of the world?
Either it was more of a tribal or local religion or one has to accept that another religion like Islam was from God for all humanity
3) If Guru Nanak was inspired by God, then why did he take 70% of the scripture from Muslim saints and scholars and include their poems, teachings and ideas into Divine Scripture.
That would only mean either there wasn’t any inspiration or he simply copied teachings from other religions.
4) as we know about 5 K’s that every Sikh should keep. It includes KESH (keeps hair uncut).
This means a person is not meant to cut any hair of his body from head to toe including hair under arm pits as well around private parts (for both men and women) all their lives.
Its quite unethical to be so unclean through out one’s life, rather it may possibly give rise to various harmful medical diseases?
How could this be a teaching of Holy Almighty God?
is this truly something inspired to the Guru from God?
5) Finally, I invite my fellow Sikh friends to look deeply into these matters and come forward towards the true religion of God (I.e. Islam), follow Mohammed (pbuh) as last prophet of God (since even Guru Nanak himself followed Muslim saints teachings and those Muslim saints followed Prophet Mohammed saws) and accept the true divine revelation Quran (which does not have any human statements rather directly revelation from God)
Concise Definition of One true God Allah in Quran
Surah 112:1-4
“Say: “He is Allah, The One and Only”
Allah the absolute, the eternal
He begets not, nor was He begotten
There is none comparable unto Him.”
