UN Welcomes Refugee Plan
The UN has welcomed the EU’s plan to take in 160 thousand refugees. It’s called for more reception centres to be built in Greece, Italy and Hungary. On Wednesday, the president of the European Commission announced a plan for mandatory refugee quotas throughout the the bloc. The UN’s Refugee Agency has asked for 200 thousand more people to be relocated. The UNHCR says more than 380 thousand asylum seekers have crossed the
Mediterranean so far this year.
Fighting Continues in Cizre
Security forces and militants from the outlawed PKK are fighting in the southeastern city of Cizre. The ministry of interior affairs says several civilians have been killed and health workers attacked by the militants. Officials put the city under curfew on September 5th following a series of terror attacks by PKK on security forces in the southeast.
Bid to Block Iran Deal Fails
Senate Republicans have failed to gain enough votes to block the international agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear programme. In July, six world powers and Iran reached an agreement on a nuclear deal in exchange for lifting sanctions. Although Republicans say they will still try to fight the deal, President Barack Obama can begin implementing it next week.
Typhoon Etau Flooding Worsens
More than 400 thousand people have been evacuated as floods caused by Typhoon Etau sweep across the northeast. Three people have died and 27 are missing in cities north of Tokyo. Several rivers have burst their banks. The Meteorological Agency is warning people of mudslides and more heavy flooding. A spokesman for the company operating the Fukushima nuclear plant says the flooding overwhelmed its drainage pumps on Thursday. And hundreds of tonnes of radiation-contaminated water have now entered the ocean.
