California Wildfires: Cal Fire briefs President Biden, Gov. Newsom on Los Angeles wildfires on January 8, 2025.
Two people are dead and more than 1,000 structures have been destroyed as fierce wildfires raged in the Los Angeles area. Fast-moving flames are burning through homes and businesses as residents flee smoke-filled canyons in picturesque neighborhoods that are home to many celebrities. Many of the towering fires began Tuesday and burned uncontained Wednesday. They were fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, which gusted to more than 70 mph in some spots. Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state has deployed more than 1,400 firefighting personnel to battle the blazes. Oregon is sending 240 firefighters to help.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirbyy, who held a virtual briefing for reporters, said it was “it was important for the president while he was there to make it clear to the people of Southern California how diligently our government and our administration is going to support their firefighting efforts, but also their recovery efforts.”
President Joe Biden was in the Los Angeles area for an event Tuesday that the White House later postponed because of the fires. He is currently flying back to Washington.
