Should you be eating before your workout? Well, it depends on your fitness goals and several other variables. When talking about whether or not you should be eating before a workout, I am going to give you the benefits of eating vs not eating before a workout.
Benefit #1: INCREASED ENERGY DURING YOUR WORKOUT. Eating before a workout will help energize the workout. I am not talking about stuffing your face, but simply getting some nutrition in your body before working out. You don’t want to feel sluggish from having a big meal. Nutrient dense foods will help fuel your workout.
Benefit #2: GOOD FOOD BEFORE A WORKOUT CAN HELP YOU LIFT HEAVIER. Proper glycogen storage will help you lift heavier loads, pushing your workouts to be harder. It will also boost stamina to help you have longer training sessions.
These benefits come from choosing the right kinds of foods, prior to your workouts. For example, if you are choosing breakfast burritos, fried foods, processed foods, and sugary pastries, you are likely going to experience the opposite of the benefits above.
Now, what are some of the benefits of NOT EATING before a workout. This is a great way to train when your goal is fat loss!
Benefit #1: YOUR BODY USES FAT FOR FUEL. When you don’t eat before a workout, your body does not need to go through the glycogen storage before using fat for energy. Thus a big reason for why this is a great way to burn fat during your workouts.
Benefit #2: WORKING OUT WITHOUT FEELING FULL OR BLOATED. A lot of guys feel bloated if they eat anything before working out. This can make it difficult to have an intense and productive workout session. Skipping the meal will help with the uncomfortable belly bloat.
When determining whether you should do one or the other, you need to ask yourself; what is your main fitness goal?
If you are trying to build more muscle, if so, eating before your workout is good.
If you are trying to lose fat then avoiding eating before a workout is best for you.
If you are wanting to maintain a healthy weight and maintain shape, eat something small before your workout, but not a full meal.
