More than 40,000 Syrians have crossed the border into Iraq over the past two weeks seeking sanctuary from the fighting back home.
They are only some of the two million who have fled into neighbouring countries, but when they arrive a short fall in funding for refugee aid means conditions are basic.
The head of the UN's refugee agency in Syria, Tarik Kurdi explained the problem:
"The UNHCR has asked for 250 million US dollars (from international donors) of which we have only received about 70 million dollars."
Cash-strapped aid agencies are doing their best and providing relief programmes but there is little money for educating children, providing trauma counselling or in some areas for even helping refugees access clean water and medical care.
