(11 Feb 2021) The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing New York City's Lunar New Year celebration to go virtual and postpone the parade that attracts thousands each year. The organizers are asking people not to come down to the city's Chinatown to celebrate.
"We're going to have a virtual celebration limited to the regulations," Steven Tin with Better Chinatown USA said. "We are closing the street also, so we're going to have like over 100 community leaders and elected officials to come down with the performance, and it will go on live on a lot of platforms –YouTube."
The pandemic has also canceled the traditional fireworks display.
"We're not going to have the firecracker, but we're going to use the confetti and the lions, the drums to chase away the traditional evil in the Chinese tradition, which this year is the worst of them all: The COVID-19," Tin told The Associated Press.
Tin hopes the parade can be rescheduled for June to coincide the Asian Pacific Heritage Month celebrations.
Last year, thousands of people lined the streets of Chinatown to watch the parade. 2021 marks the year of the ox, one of the 12 animals in the Chinese astrological chart.
