Did you know that the current United States flag was designed not by a lifelong flag designer or professional embroiderer…but by a 17 year old student?
You see, back in 1958, the White House was receiving submissions for a new design for the U.S. flag and many U.S. schools decided to take part.
One high school student, Robert G Heft, anticipated that Alaska and Hawaii would soon be joining the U.S., and designed a flag with 50 stars…when in 1958, there were only 48 states.
Of over 1,500 design submissions, President Dwight D. Eisenhower selected Robert’s flag to fly across the nation. Funny enough, Heft’s teacher gave him a B- on the project and reprimanded him for having too many stars…When in fact, Alaska and Hawaii joined the union in 1959…making 50 states. His teacher, embarrassed, then changed his grade on the assignment to an “A”.
