Unlike many elderly people who choose to stay home and take a rest, Setyo Utomo who is known as Mbah Lindu choose to continue working selling gudeg or a slow cooking spiced young jackfruit, an ethnic cuisine from the city of Yogyakarta. The 96 years old lady has been cooking and selling gudeg since the 40s before the Japanese troops occupied Indonesia in 1942. She mentioned that she decided to continue working because she feels healthier than just stays at home and does nothing.
Everyday the mother of five would make 15 kilogram of gudeg. She would make it as she gets home from selling gudeg in her street stall in Jalan Sosrowijayan. Her stall opens at 5 to 10 am. She is normally assisted by her youngest daughter Ratiah who acts as a cashier.
I personally like her gudeg because it is not very sweet. If you happen to visit the city of Yogyakarta, gudeg is a must try dish as Yogyakarta is known as Gudeg city. There are many places in town where you can get gudeg including Plengkung Gading. However, having gudeg made by the oldest gudeg maker in town will simply give you different experience.
